Major climate scientific paper is withdrawn

climate report.png

CM is shocked! Really? A major scientific paper, which claimed to have found rapid warming in the oceans as a result of manmade global warming, has been withdrawn after an amateur climate scientist found major errors in its statistical methodology. Who’d a thunk?

The authors sheepishly said,

Shortly after publication, arising from comments from Nicholas Lewis, we realized that our reported uncertainties were underestimated owing to our treatment of certain systematic errors as random errors. In addition, we became aware of several smaller issues in our analysis of uncertainty. Although correcting these issues did not substantially change the central estimate of ocean warming, it led to a roughly fourfold increase in uncertainties, significantly weakening implications for an upward revision of ocean warming and climate sensitivity. Because of these weaker implications, the Nature editors asked for a Retraction, which we accept.”

Clearly, some 4-folds are smaller than others.

Nicholas Lewis said after the retraction that,

“This is just the latest example of climate scientists letting themselves down by using incorrect statistics. The climate field needs to get professional statisticians involved up front if it is going to avoid this kind of embarrassment in future”.

Dr Benny Peiser, director of the Global Warming Policy Forum, said

Climatology is littered with examples of bad statistics, going back to the infamous Hockey Stick graph and beyond. Peer review is failing and it is falling to amateurs to find the errors. Scientists in the field should be embarrassed”.

The larger question from CM is, aren’t the data supposed to be the foundation against which billions of taxpayer dollars are being allocated to save the planet?

CM holds that the scientific community should be held to the same standards as bankers. When bankers commit fraud, individuals face millions and financial institutions billions in fines and jail terms. If scientists have absolutely no repercussions for making dud predictions based on manipulated or homogenised figures, is it any wonder the outcomes tend to be overwhelmingly overstate warming?

If climate scientists were offered an amnesty period of 6 months to come forward and retract bogus claims or face proper sanctions if caught for fiddling the numbers, imagine how much of the published works would be aggressively ratcheted down. Whistleblower laws in the US now incentivise the whistleblower in the millions. Surely there are many scientists in the climate change community who fear speaking out. For the scientists who claim their work is peer-reviewed and flawless, they have absolutely nothing to fear by such legal frameworks. Yet watch them howl at the moon at the mere entertainment of the prospect. That will tell us all we need to know.

Maybe a scientific/educational Royal Commission makes a lot of sense too. The horror stories would undoubtedly dwarf the banks given such loose governance.

Then shut up and start partying

Are these people serious? If we know there is nothing we can do to stop climate change, we should be partying like never before. Might as well finish on a high note than dwell in abject misery waiting til 2050 and finding out we’ve wasted 31 years on something that didn’t eventuate.

When will these nutters stop such hysteria?

Obama stamps foot over sea level rises

Obama House.png

Climate alarmist Barack Obama tweeted in 2013 that we must #ActOnClimate because of rising sea levels. He implored that sea level rises would pose a real threat to US cities.

So the Obamas are looking to buy a $14.85m home on the shores of Martha’s Vineyard. Is he a hypocrite or merely recognizing that the science isn’t settled or that climate change sceptics are right?

Who knew Mother Nature was so classist? Shame on her.

Hopefully, Obama invites Greta Thunberg to his new home. Even better she can pull right up to the dock.

Thank you Simon F for the flag.

GetUp! smears 150,000 surf lifesavers

We understand that GetUp! hate Tony Abbott MP. The left-wing activist group is working hard to oust him in favour of independent candidate Zali Steggall for the seat of Warringah in the upcoming federal election. So not two days have passed since the tragic news that a father and son volunteer surf lifesaver team (SLS) drowned trying to save a stranded tourist, GetUp! thought this campaign was appropriate to take a pot shot. It has since withdrawn it.

Australia has a proud record of volunteer spirit. There are 150,000 people registered as surf lifesavers. Abbott happens to spend his spare time serving in both the SLS and the Rural Fire Service NSW. He isn’t there for photo shoots but actually puts his life on the line to help his community. Talk about cheap political point scoring.

For the record the Surf Lifesavers this season have rescued 5,353 people and performed first aid on 21,470 others. To put that in context, that is 30 people rescued and 451 preventative actions every hour. The SLS patrol 12,000km of beaches, 36,000km of coastline  and 100 million beach visits annually. This is SLS’s creed:

We are a can-do movement.
Optimistic at every turn.
Eternally vigilant.
Forever serving Australia.
For we believe in life.
In the sanctity of life.
And in our great Australian way of life.
We support it. We protect it. We celebrate it.
We are Surf Life Saving.

You can donate to the SLS here. CM just did.

NYT – try doing some research for a change?

It is true that many airports are built near sea level. In fact many airports are built around swamps/marshland (less suitable for residential areas) which actually makes aircraft more susceptible to avian events (bird strike) than crashing sea waves. So how convenient it must have been to The NY Times to blame the recent terrible typhoon in Japan on climate change when in reality Kansai International Airport’s well known drainage inadequacies were exposed. The airport opened in 1994 and engineers quickly realized it was sinking through poor design. It needs to pump water out constantly to prevent it from drowning. It has zero to do with rising sea levels but the softer base beneath the waves. Yet The NY Times wrote about the plight of stranded passengers and how it portended their imminent peril. Puhlease.

So why didn’t NY Times journalist Hiroko Tabuchi write about the UN IPCC’s own climbdowns from their alarmism in recent years? Note climate skeptics did not write these claims. No, it was easier just to join two dots together without facts.

The IPCC wrote with respect to heavy rains:

“there continues to be a lack of evidence and thus low confidence regarding the sign of trend in the magnitude and/or frequency of floods on a global scale“

With respect to storms and cyclones:

confidence in large scale changes in the intensity of extreme extratropical cyclones since 1900 is low. There is also low confidence for a clear trend in storminess proxies over the last century due to inconsistencies between studies or lack of long-term data in some parts of the world…Over periods of a century or more, evidence suggests slight decreases in the frequency of tropical cyclones making landfall in the North Atlantic and the South Pacific, once uncertainties in observing methods have been considered. Little evidence exists of any longer-term trend in other ocean basins…”

As for rising sea levels impacting Pacific Islands.

Professor Paul Kench of the University of Auckland and Australian scientists have shown in a study of 600 coral reef islands in the Pacific, 40% are growing in size, 40% are stable and 20% shrinking…

Yet The NY Times went further. Who knew Roger Federer was also a victim of climate change?

US Open performances.

Well the brilliant minds of The NY Times suggested Federer’s loss was caused by global warming even though it was 0.19 degrees above average. Maybe that is why Serena got hot under the collar? Or was it because 20yo Naomi Osaka’s youth allowed her to weather the heat more effectively?

Air Travel

Yet the true litmus test of humankind’s blind panic is best described by the IATA’s air traffic forecasts which point to a doubling of air traffic by 2030. It is only fair that the general population follow in the footsteps of the 50,000 climate disciples that fly half way around the world every year to COP summits to kneel at the altar of the IPCC to warn us of being destroyed by our recklessness.

Once again, ridiculously researched junk journalism is put forward by a paper that assures us “All the news fit to print.” Joke.
