Identity Politics rejected by those who would seemingly benefit

Quillette columnist Coleman Hughes testified in front of a House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties on the subject of a bill proposing to conduct a commission into slavery reparations. Hughes’ testimony was not what activists wanted to hear so he was heckled by them.

He argued that such a path would further divide the nation. Such is the scourge of identity politics and the victim mentality.

He was booed when he said, “Black people don’t need another apology. We need safer neighborhoods and better schools. We need a less punitive criminal justice system. We need affordable health care. And none of these things can be achieved through reparations for slavery.”

He went on to describe that reparations were not only divisive, but an “insult to many black Americans by putting a price on the suffering of their ancestors, and we would turn the relationship between black Americans and white Americans from a coalition into a transaction

Reparations by definition are only given to victims, so the moment you give me reparations, you’ve made me into a victim without my consent. Not just that, you’ve made 1/3 of black Americans who poll against reparations into victims without their consent, and black Americans have fought too long for the right to define themselves to be spoken for in such a condescending manner...

The question is not what America owes me by virtue of my ancestry, the question is what all Americans owe each other by virtue of being citizens of the same nation…And the obligation of citizenship is not transactional. It’s not contingent on ancestry. It never expires, and it can’t be paid off. For all these reasons, bill HR 40 is a moral and political mistake.”

Isn’t it ironic how out of touch the political class is when the very people they hope will give them the answer they want to hear do the exact opposite.

Global Warming & Murder

Last week, CM wrote about the American Psychological Association (APA) claim that,

“between 2010 and 2099, climate change would cause an estimated additional 30,000 murders, 200,000 cases of rape, and 3.2 million burglaries due to increased average temperatures.”

If we take the US murder rates we see that states with colder average temperatures have higher murder rates.

In the highest quartile for murder per 100,000 inhabitants, we see

DC (Washington)

Maryland

Alaska

Illinois (Chicago)

None of the above states are regarded for excessively high temperatures bs national averages.

The lowest quartile for murder were found in the following states

Hawaii

Idaho

Utah

Arizona was in the 3rd quartile of least likelihood of murder. Seems that heat is helpful.

Did the APA get distracted by snowfalls in Hawaii?

As for the 200,000 extra rapes as quoted in the APA report,

The most rapes per 100,000 people committed in the following states

Alaska

Michigan

Colorado

The 3 states above more likely to suffer cold weather have rates of rape per 100,000 inhabitants higher than the national average. At the low end of rapes per 100,000 we have:

New Jersey

Connecticut

Georgia

Note Hawaii, California and Florida also have rape rates below the national average.

So we can pretty much conclude that the idea global warming will trigger such crimes is not supported by temperatures as they stand. On the contrary Americans should pray for warmer weather to lower the incidence of murder and rape because the stats contradict the studies.

Nazi scum?

Just a day before the 75th anniversary of D-Day, where 156,000 allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy to defeat the Nazis, unhinged protestors in London can scream at a person with different views as  “Nazi scum”. We can always count on the tolerant left to engage in thoughtful, respectful and open debate. Their generosity has now spread to offering unsolicited milkshakes to those they disagree with.

What is striking within all of this, is 1) the police did absolutely nothing (no surprise in Mayor Khan’s London and to be honest the constable looked riddled with fear);  2) every other grievance of the left seems present at the march from the Extinction Rebellion, Islamophobia, Anti-Semitism (ironically practiced by numerous members of the Labour Party which aligns with many of their protests), a call for a general election (which would likely see even bigger swings against this lot) etc; and 3) so many protesters hiding behind masks. What is it with these people who can’t own their protest?  Maybe the Univesity of Mons can hand her an honorary doctorate for standing up to Trump?

Welcome to 2019. To think of the 4,500 poor young allied soldiers who lost their lives on that fateful day 75 years ago trying to defend against the very tyranny these people wish to reintroduce. Those calling others Nazis should take a long stone cold look in the mirror to see what true fascism looks like.

Don’t do the crime if you don’t wanna pay $130k overtime

Good news. The City of Chicago sent the US$130,000 worth of overtime spent by the Chicago Police Department to investigate the hoax to Jussie Smollett giving him one week to pay or risk further legal action. Is it the job of the Chicago taxpayers to fund Jussie’s DIY hate crime hoax career enhancement and self promotion program? What utter contempt shown by Smollett’s representatives to demand that the Mayor & Chicago Police Department apologise for “dragging an innocent man’s name through the mud.” Thankfully the FOIA request to the CPD meant they could release all of the documents before the suppression order was put in place. Just desserts.

President Trump is absolutely correct to get the FBI & DOJ involved in this case to look at how such a ridiculous outcome could ever come to be. How does a First Assistant State Attorney with 30 years in the role openly say Smollett was guilty then drop all 16 felony charges? Now his excuse is that the SA office is more focused on combating violent crimes.

Truth 1, Identity politics -1

Jussie Smollett gave us the perfect example of why identity politics is so poisonous. Here was a man potentially willing to make a claim against two innocent white people and jail them for up to 20 years for hate crimes not committed just to bump his salary and smear 63mn Trump supporters at the same time. Smollett appears to be exactly what he condemns.

Identity politics creates a marketplace for victimhood. CM made these very remarks as the #metoo market started to gain momentum 18 months ago. How many men have been wrongfully accused of crimes they haven’t committed? Has anything happened to those women who admitted they lied about SCJ Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulting them? Are we just to believe all women? All LGBT without question? Do activists truly speak on behalf of all minorities? Of course not. The truth is that the overwhelming majority of women, LGBT and minorities are fair minded people. Most don’t tie themselves up in this nonsense.

Look at how quickly Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Maxine Waters & Nancy Pelosi jumped behind Jussie to condemn the racist MAGA lynch mob. No facts. Just feelings. More ammo to condemn Trump. Instead of openly apologizing to those they hastily condemned, they did the exact opposite – dishonorably deleting the tweets which showed them up for the double standards they clearly uphold (and we worry about Trump’s twitchy finger on the nuke button with knee-jerkers like this?!?). So out of touch are the liberals who blindly backed the false claim, that Jussie Smollett even lost serial SJW Alyssa Milano’s support. That’s a miracle in itself.

What of the $100,000s the Chicago Police Department was forced to spend to investigate a lie? What thought did Smollett give real victims of crime to divert resources away just to promote his own career? The CPD Chief was bang on the money with the selfish act.

Smollett’s Class 4 felony carries up to a 1.5 year jail term. If he is found guilty, he should serve the maximum penalty possible. Being gay or black should play no part in sentencing. All crimes should be equal in front of the law regardless of political affiliation, race, gender, sexual proclivity or any other identity marker.

On the plus side, Smollett has substantially undermined the identity politics industry. This, like Covington, will be a gift that keeps giving for libertarians. The numerous Democratic presidential nominees only showed how dysfunctional they are to champion identity ahead of character. This wasn’t about policy and praying for a united America. It was all about tribalism. All they did was make their base out to be fools.

Some suggested there be leniency shown toward Smollett in sentencing. There in lies the problem. The media are so desperate to run narratives that fact checking be damned. So frothing at the mouth have they become that anything will do if it can smear those who hold different opinions. How soon the repentant media forgot the promises over their mistakes surrounding Covington before their derangement syndrome got the better of them again.

The really sad part is that the media were so desperate that Smollett’s original hoax was true that they fell apart when it was found to be a lie. Disappointment when the narrative fails to back up subjective views. The mainstream media want disunity, discord and animosity to feed their ratings. Enemy of the people? Certainly not friends.

Perhaps the irony in all of this is that had Smollett truly cared to stage a believable attack he should have paid white actors to do it. The problem might have have been that they cost substantially more than the two gentlemen he paid by personal cheque (talk about leaving paper trails). Proves the old adage, “you get what you pay for.” False economy in a nutshell.

Had Smollett embraced libertarian values of meritocracy, hard work and opportunity he may have earned his pay rise legitimately. By embracing liberal values of perpetual victimhood by throwing 63mn people under a bus, he has now self-inflicted his own demise. Just desserts, even in prison.

Domestic Violence & Child Abuse – a global issue

DV.png

Domestic violence and child abuse – inextricably linked to the breakdown of families. Two distasteful topics to be sure and the stats seem to be getting much worse. In 2015 authorities in the US recorded 3.4mn child abuse investigations from 3.1mn in 2011. For 2015, a nationally estimated 1,670 children died of abuse and neglect, mostly at the hands of their mothers. Alcohol, drug and other substance abuse has been a contributing factor. DV hotlines in America receive approximately 20,800 calls a day according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. In 2016, 57,335 URLs contained child sexual abuse imagery and 2,416 domain names worldwide were linked to this content. This is a 21% increase from 1,991 in 2015. Until recently, most child sexual abuse images were found in the US(57%), but Europe now hosts 60% of all material. 21,000 of these sites are run out of The Netherlands. Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) notes a 258% increase in new website domains being bought specifically to show the abuse of children.

Even in peace loving Japan, domestic violence (DV) has seen a very sharp upturn according to the National Police Agency this week. DV reached almost 70,000 recorded cases in 2016. Between 2010 and 2016, victims of DV have doubled and over 4x since 2005.  The Ministry for Health, Labor & Welfare (MHLW) has 208 child consultation centres which fielded over 88,000 cases in 2014, a 20.5%YoY increase or 22x the level of 20 years ago. Child pornography cases continue to rise in Japan too from 1,342 in 2010 to over 1,800 in 2014 . While a law was passed in July 2014 banning possession of child pornography, sentences only carry a maximum 1 year jail sentence or ¥1mn fine. Sexually explicit manga, anime and computer graphics which display child pornography are exempt because lawmakers view these as outside the scope of real children.

In Australia some 264,000 DV incidents were recorded in 2015.  In 2016–17, about 72,000 women, 34,000 children and 9,000 men seeking homelessness services reported that family and domestic violence caused or contributed to their homelessness according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

The number of children receiving child protection services in Australia has risen by about 20% over the past 4 years—from 135,000 in 2012/13 to 162,000 in 2015/16. Nationally, emotional abuse was the most common primary type of abuse or neglect substantiated for children (45%), followed by neglect (25%), physical (18%) and sexual abuse (12%). Overall, just over half (51%) of children who were the subject of substantiations were girls (23,000 compared with 22,200 boys). Girls were almost twice as likely to have a substantiation recorded for sexual abuse than boys (16% compared with 8.5%). Boys had slightly higher rates of physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect than girls (19% compared with 18%, 46% compared with 43%, and 26% compared with 23%, respectively.

According to the American Society of  Positive Care of Children (ASPCC), 14% of all men in prison and 36% of women in prison were abused as children, about twice the frequency seen among the general population.

The Department of Health & Human Services notes that child abuse reports in America involved 7.2 million children. More than one-half (54.1%) of perpetrators were women, 45% of perpetrators were men, and 0.9% were of unknown sex. The majority of victims consisted of three ethnicities—White (43.2%), Hispanic (23.6%), and African-American (21.4%).

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children born with fetal alcohol syndrome may develop learning and behavior problems including hyperactivity, poor concentration, and memory problems. The National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health conducted a study on neonatal abstinence syndrome and determined babies suffering from opiate withdrawal were more likely to have low birth-weight and respiratory complications. 11,000 babies are born to crack dependent mothers each year and cost the state $750mn p.a. to treat. Victims reported with the alcohol abuse child risk factor during their first year, 87.9% of the victims were reported during their first month of life.

These trends are worrying. As an increasing number of countries make it easier to divorce by offering extra support to single parents, responsibility and accountability are being cast aside. The government essentially endorses families to split and get the single parent to marry the state. 40% of White and 70% of black households in America are now single parent. In Japan one quarter of families are now single parent. As we wrote last week, children that grow up in single parent households are far more likely to suffer emotional problems and issues with self-esteem.

Since 2007, the rate of suicide deaths among children between the ages of 10 and 14 in the US has doubled according to the Center for Disease Control Prevention(CDC). Most children under 13 who kill themselves are boys: 76% of those who died in 1999-2015 were male. Since 2014, suicide has become one of the leading causes of death in children aged 10-19 in Japan. 60% of the children and 46% of the young adolescents in the US who died from suicide had problems with friends or family members. School problems and recent crises were noted as common triggers.

Per our previous post, the police department that encouraged school kids to walk up to and communicate with outcast kids as opposed to walking out on school would have far more positive long term impacts. Yet authorities seem more keen on policing political correctness. Running school programs that reinforce ideals of celebrating identity politics that openly discourage traditional families.  Reading through the many years of warnings both school authorities and law enforcement/intelligence authorities had prior to the Parkland, Florida shooter, Nikolas Cruz, committing his schoolyard rampage the egg-shell culture of not tackling his issues head on led to a potentially avoidable tragedy. Yet in today’s culture shaming innocents, scapegoating unrelated organisations, vilifying corporations and pushing expedience after the fact take priority to taking responsibility and looking at ways of preventing the root cause rather than the method.

After reading through these depressing statistics, it is not too hard to envisage things going from bad to worse from here. It isn’t just an American issue but a global trend that only gets harder to treat the longer it festers.

Well done Senator Leyonhjelm for inviting Milo to Parliament

8818DCD7-CFFB-4221-AA89-AEA1DB52AEE8.jpeg

Full marks to Senator David Leyonhjelm for inviting Milo Yiannopolous to Parliament House. Despite the Greens Party leader Senator Richard Di Natale doing his best to ban him as a hate preacher, bigot, racist etc etc Milo had a pretty full audience. It is not whether one agrees with what he says but it is important to let any ideas out in the marketplace of free speech and debate the issues rather than shut them down. Indeed one would hope that Di Natale has such a strong case he could pin the Armani suited Milo’s arguments in person. That’s the thing. If Di Natale is convincing enough people will back his views on the sheer weight of  merit.

As an Australian citizen (even from afar) I watch the painful political correctness in the West that seems to turn a blind eye to almost anything that even remotely runs up against an identikit. We mustn’t offend this group or that group.

To be honest, as an example our government, in its quest to prevent on the fringe Islamophobia actually creates the environment for a worse time for Muslims. The majority of Muslims probably don’t care if we celebrate Christmas with trees in Martin Place but our political class decide to strip the tree of its significance in order to pander to something that just isn’t relevant. “Merry Christmas” is replaced with “Seasons Greetings.” In turn, some think that Muslims are behind it which means governments push for “hate speech laws” to cover up for their own stupidity and short-sightedness. Celebrate Australian traditions. Just like Aborigines seeking umbrage over statues of Cook and Phillip – the overwhelming majority don’t care but our politicians are all too busy trying to cater to another minority whose arguments and grievances are usually trivial to say the least.

Even the lunatic torch and swastika flag bearers in Charlottesville should be able to protest. Sunlight (torchlight) is the best disinfectant. Let these people go on parade for all to see. One can see for themselves they have no platform. The KKK (the former militia of the Democratic Party) has dwindled from 4mn members to less than 6,000. Out of a population of 330mn people they represent less than 0.02% of the population.

Probably some of the best footage of ‘like minds thanks to open platforms’ came when a BLM protest was given time on a stage at a Trump supporters event. BLM were told you’ve got several minutes and if you don’t like it then tough!

Still some in the political class feel the need to introduce all manner of laws to cover up their own weakness. At least some voices in parliament are not afraid to speak out and defend free speech. So credit to Senator Leyonhjelm for encouraging Milo to talk to our lawmakers.

It is not whether one thinks Milo is palatable (although a sellout tour in Australia is indicative) it is that he has a view. We don’t have to agree with it but again the left who try to shut him down will find far more backers of their cause if they combat him with concise and constructive arguments based on facts and truths. Said with authority and authenticity and watchMilo’s support wane. Indeed shutting him down actually helps Milo sell more tickets so it ends up being an own goal.

It really makes me want to join the political class in Australia to shore up the tide that is flowing toward feeble policy, further inaction and muzzling what they’re too gutless to admit. I want peace and harmony as much as the next person but it doesn’t come about by silencing dissenting voices. Embracing those voices is a tenet of democracy. Perhaps if the country was being run competently then people like Milo would be a footnote rather than front page.
