Northern Beaches Council to declare a climate emergency

Well done Northern Beaches Council (NBC) for joining the echo chamber group think fest. Shame on it for being so late to the party. What does being the 800th odd city/country to declare actually mean other than inability to think critically for themselves?

In the 2017/18 annual report it states the council saved 293 tons of CO2. Given that Australia produces around 561m tons, this amazing effort has meant a reduction of 0.0000522% of Australia’s total. Put it against Australia’s CO2 impact vs the entire atmosphere means that Northern Beaches have hammered home a mammoth 0.000000000699857% saving! Yes 9 zeroes. Does every bit count?

At 1% of Australia’s population, how much is Northern Beaches willing to spend in ratepayers’ coin to save sea level rises? Maybe the council should ask why it hasn’t seen a cataclysmic residential fire sale from residents living by the beach?

The bigger joke was the invite of former Climate Commissioner Tim Flannery to talk to the council ahead of the climate emergency vote. How can a man who has made so many dud predictions be called upon for expert advice? Well the reality is if NBC want to justify their action to declare a climate emergency who better to do their bidding inside the echo chamber than Flannery. Who is willing to bet against the proposition that no one was invited to prosecute the other side of the argument?

For CM the largest irony is the cover of the 2017/18 annual report features a Yamaha VX Waverunner. It has a gas guzzling 3-cylinder 1049cc engine. It gets 9mpg which would be at the absolute bottom on an engine capacity basis for fuel economy across all NBC fleet vehicles.

CM did notice that the spending on “environment” fell by around $13.5m on last year. Not to worry – the $81m spent on “Environment” essentially includes noxious plants and insect/vermin control; other environmental protection; solid waste management, including domestic waste; other waste management; other sanitation; and garbage, street cleaning, drainage and stormwater management.

Yawn. More pathetic virtue signaling.
